Twiss (Stony Brook University, NY) and <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/alivarda\/\">Alexandra Livarda<\/a> (ICAC\/GIAP-CERCA), a new book is already out!<\/h5>\n<p><strong>\u2018Food taboos in archaeology\u2019<\/strong> by Max Price explores the fascinating history of food taboos.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The volume is free to access and download until March 24th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/elements\/food-taboos-in-archaeology\/448EB81BA5F565DD45654C3632B3BA9D\">here<\/a>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anthropologists have struggled with the concept of the food taboo for over a century; and archaeologists struggle with detecting them in the material signatures of the past. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-106356 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/food-taboos.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"323\" height=\"446\" \/>Yet by recognizing that ancient peoples must have followed taboos, some of which may have persisted for thousands of years, we gain insight into how cultural traditions shaped the ways in which people ate and interacted with their environments. This Element concerns food and the cultural structures that surround it. It provides an overview of the history and anthropological understandings of food taboos, and offers critical engagement with the current archaeological method and theory investigating these.
