GIAP <\/a>research team is been invited to test its automatic detection system of ceramic fragments<\/strong> in Sardinia, as an activity of the research project LASS. H\u00e8ctor Orengo<\/a><\/strong>, supported by Paloma Aliende<\/a>, from the ICAC’s\u00a0Graphic Documentation Unit<\/a>, and the collaboration of the ICAC’s visiting researcher\u00a0Arnau Garcia<\/a>, will be in Sardinia from July 7 to 12.<\/p>\n

The project\u00a0LASS,\u00a0Landscape Archaeology of Southwest Sardinia Project<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0aims to define human-environment interactions from the Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age\u00a0(ca. 950-720 BC), a period that in the specific case of Sardinia is known as\u00a0Nuragic<\/em>\u00a0and it led to a whole civilization. In particular, we seek to understand how the Nuragic emergence and Late Punic decline of the important central site of Pani Loriga affected rural organization and systems of extraction sensu lato<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The LASS project<\/a> makes a multi-disciplinary approach and uses different methodologies (surface survey, geospatial analysis, diachronic site-level documentation…) and different study cases (Neolithic mortuary sites, mining sites, pottery…). The study area, however, focuses on the low hills and small valleys between the Sulcis Mountains and the Gulf of Sant\u2019Antioco (a patchwork landscape of schist, granites, and karst, possessing fertile valleys as well as varied mineral resources), in the southwest of Sardinia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project is an initiative of the\u00a0University of Padova <\/a>(Italy), the\u00a0Department of Cultural Heritage and Activities<\/a>\u00a0(Italian Government), the\u00a0Archaeological Area Pani Loriga<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Florida State University<\/a>\u00a0(USA).<\/p>\n

Orengo<\/a> y el ICAC<\/a> have been involved to the project due to Orengo’s work on\u00a0artificial intelligence to settlements detection<\/strong>.
