(Photo: Roberta Di Febo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In this new approach, the different microanalytic techniques used besides the optical microscope (electronic scanning microscopy, electronic microprobe, micro-Raman spectroscopy and <strong>synchrotron radiation<\/strong> X-ray microdiffraction) have been adapted to measure samples in form of the thin section.<\/p>\n<p>In that way, the different measurements are always performed on the same point and optical observations can be readily correlated with the compositional and structural data obtained from all the other analytical techniques. This provides a solid framework for correct mineralogical identification of the <strong>microcrystalline inclusions<\/strong> that appear in the glazes.<\/p>\n<p>An important part of the sample study and analysis took place in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albasynchrotron.es\/en\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ALBA\u00a0Synchrotron<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0a 3rd generation Synchrotron Light facility located in Cerdanyola del Vall\u00e8s, (Barcelona), being the newest source in the Mediterranean area.\u00a0It is a complex of electron accelerators to produce synchrotron light, which allows the visualization of the atomic structure of matter as well as the study of its properties.<\/p>\n<h6>From a historical view, the identification of the crystals found inside the glazes is intended to provide data on the technological processes used in their manufacture, both on the raw materials used and the firing conditions.<\/h6>\n<p>These data are very useful to determine the provenance of the samples and to investigate if they are high-quality products imported to consumption localities or imitations of lower quality produced locally. Therefore, <strong>microcrystals can act as technological markers<\/strong>\u00a0and so inform us about the ceramic technologies, knowledge and technical skills of craftsmen, the awareness of the physical behaviour of raw materials and knowledge transfer between cultures and regions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43141\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43141\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tesi-Roberta-Di-Fabo-ceramica.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-43141\" src=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tesi-Roberta-Di-Fabo-ceramica-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mostra de cer\u00e0miques de la Casa de la Convalesc\u00e8ncia de Vic. (Photo: Roberta Di Febo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Specifically, this thesis considered ceramics with brown decorations of iron and manganese, with particular attention to <strong>ceramics of the type <em>\u00e0 taches noires<\/em><\/strong> from the Proven\u00e7al site of Jouques and common ware from the archaeological works made in the historical building &#8220;Casa de Convalesc\u00e8ncia&#8221; in Vic (Barcelona).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/rdifebo\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Roberta\u00a0Di Febo<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0carried out this thesis project,\u00a0<em><strong>Identification of microcrystalline phases in Lead Glazes of ceramics from 17th-19th centuries: archaeometric implications<\/strong>,<\/em>\u00a0within the doctoral program in Experimental Sciences and Technology of the University of Vic, in the Engineering Department, under the direction of Dr Judit Molera (UVIC) and Dr Trinitat Pradell (UPC).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43162\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tesi-Roberta-Di-Fabo-sincrotro-ALBA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-43162\" src=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tesi-Roberta-Di-Fabo-sincrotro-ALBA-400x303.jpg\" alt=\"La investigadora Roberta Di Febo (dreta) al Sincrot\u00f3 ALBA.
