International meeting in homage to Isabel Rod\u00e0 de Llanza<\/a><\/h6>\n

The ICAC and the URV, with the collaboration of the museum MUHBA in Barcelona, organize an expert internacional meeting to reflect on the\u00a0uses of marble as a symbol of status and power in the Roman Empire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

21-23 November, MUHBA Pla\u00e7a del Rei (Barcelona)<\/span><\/p>\n

The ubiquity of marbles and other ornamental\u00a0rocks<\/strong> (marmora<\/em>) in ancient cities, both in\u00a0the municipalities and colonies of the Empire \u2014such as Barcino<\/em>\u2014 and in the large\u00a0provincial cities \u2014including Tarraco<\/em>\u2014\u00a0powerfully illustrates how the power of\u00a0Roma<\/em>, the great capital, looms over all\u00a0manifestations, whether political, economic\u00a0or social.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the strategies and technical skills\u00a0of the ancient Romans are illustrated by the\u00a0high degree of adaptability and logistical\u00a0power employed to mine quarries<\/strong>, distribute\u00a0the material along great trade routes<\/strong> and\u00a0transform it to serve the image of the\u00a0Empire: a message of power and prestige\u00a0that is eternally linked to marble.<\/p>\n

This international meeting wants to emphasise the value\u00a0of these materials as status symbols<\/strong> that are found in architectural decoration,\u00a0sculpture and monumental epigraphy,\u00a0among other uses. It will bring together experts from different academic fields and\u00a0scientific disciplines from Catalonia, the\u00a0Iberian Peninsula and the international\u00a0sphere in general.<\/p>\n

The event is also a\u00a0homage to Dr\u00a0Isabel Rod\u00e0 de Llanza<\/a><\/strong>, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology in the UAB and former director of the ICAC, who will give a masterclass\u00a0<\/strong>before the closure of the meeting. saturday November 23th at 12.30 h. That day there will also be a guided tour of the MUHBA archaeological collections<\/strong> – Zona Franca, that will be opened especially for the occasion.<\/p>\n

Barcino-Tarraco-Roma<\/strong><\/em> is the result of the\u00a0confluence of two research projects:\u00a0\u201cOfficinae lapidariae tarraconenses<\/em>. Quarries,\u00a0Workshops and Artistic Productions in Stone\u00a0from the Provincia Tarraconensis<\/em>\u201d (HAR2015-65319-P, MINECO\/ERDF, EU); and \u201cThe\u00a0Message of Marble: Prestige, Symbolism\u00a0and Local Materials in the Western Provinces\u00a0of the Roman Empire Between Antiquity\u00a0and Early Middle Ages Through the Case of\u00a0Hispania\u201d (PGC2018-099851-A-I00, MINECO\/ERDF, EU).<\/p>\n
