{"id":48047,"date":"2020-07-01T10:02:46","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T08:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.icac.cat\/en\/?p=48047"},"modified":"2023-02-15T17:50:44","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T16:50:44","slug":"on-going-costa-de-la-serra-2020gona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/actualitat\/noticies\/2020\/on-going-costa-de-la-serra-2020gona\/","title":{"rendered":"On-going excavation works in the protohistoric site Costa de la Serra (La Secuita, Tarragona)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A new campaign of archaeological works has begun in the Late Republican\u00a0fort Costa de la Serra (La\u00a0Secuita, Tarragona).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This archaeological site is in La\u00a0Secuita, 13 km north of the city of Tarragona.\u00a0It is\u00a0<strong>a small Late Republican\u00a0Roman fort<\/strong>, dating from the end of the 2nd century BC\u00a0and the beginning of the 1st century BC.<\/p>\n<p>Different archaeological interventions led by\u00a0ICAC\u00a0since 2014 have revealed the existence of <strong>a military settlement<\/strong> that was intentionally destroyed at the time of its abandonment.<\/p>\n<p>The fort would have been in use for a short time, most likely during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sertorian_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sertorian war<\/a> (80 BC &#8211; 72 BC).\u00a0Different <strong>stretches\u00a0<\/strong><strong>of the wall and towers\u00a0have been documented<\/strong>, as well as different wall sections that would belong to barracks. There have been also recovered <strong>thre<\/strong><strong>e water tanks<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>for collecting rainwater<\/strong>, with a canalization system partially covered by slabs, probably linked to a water management system.<\/p>\n<div class=\"destacat-entrevista dreta\">\n<div class=\"small-text\">\n<p><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">From June 28 to July 17, a planned intervention is carried out by a small fieldwork team, made up of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">ICAC\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">researchers<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">, students of the Master in Classical Archaeology and volunteers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Overall research in this archaeological area is part of a broader project funded by the Catalan government (<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/recerca\/projectes-de-recerca\/projecte\/formes-docupacio-del-territori-i-evolucio-del-poblament-a-la-cessetania-occidental-durant-la-protohistoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four-year-long project<\/a> call), led by <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/cbelarte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dr Maria Carme Belarte<\/strong><\/a> (ICREA-ICAC) and <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jcanela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dr Joan Canela<\/strong><\/a> (ICAC), on the evolution and population of Western Cessetani settlements. The project itself is a continuation of a previous one, also based on the research topic of Cessetani protohistoric settlements.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeological fieldwork in Costa de la Serra began in 2015 and, since then, an annual campaign has been carried out, by different work teams, under the direction of ICAC researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/cbelarte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maria\u00a0Carme\u00a0Belarte<\/a>\u00a0(ICREA-ICAC),<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jcanela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Joan Canela<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jlopez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jordi L\u00f3pez<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/notero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N\u00faria Otero<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48028\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48028\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48028\" src=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Costa-Serra-2019-1_muralla-sud-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Costa de la Serra, campanya 2019. Detail of the extension of the southern section of the eastern wall (\u00a9 ICAC).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Restrictions due to COVID-19 situation<\/strong>\u00a0avoid overnight stays and, while it has been possible to maintain the usual duration of the archaeological works (three weeks), <span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">the work team has been reduced in order to guarantee safety distances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The work team is made up of eight people. In addition to the leading researchers (those listed above: <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/cbelarte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maria\u00a0Carme\u00a0Belarte<\/a>\u00a0(ICREA-ICAC),<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jcanela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Joan Canela<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jlopez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jordi L\u00f3pez<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/notero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N\u00faria Otero<\/a>), there are also participating an ICAC&#8217;s PhD researcher\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/ocusco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oriol\u00a0Cusc\u00f3<\/a>), a student of the <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/training\/master-in-classical-archaeology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>master in Classical Archaeology<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0and two former students from the same\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/training\/master-in-classical-archaeology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">master<\/a>\u00a0(Marc Dalmau and\u00a0Graciella\u00a0Pereda).<\/p>\n<div class=\"esquerra\">\n<div class=\"dreta\">\n<div class=\"destacat-entrevista dreta\">\n<div class=\"small-text\">\n<p>One of the volunteers now in the work team, Marc Dalmau, a former student of the Master in Classical Archaeology, is the one who discovered the site!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">The 2019 archaeological campaign confirmed that the southern stretches of the wall were almost entirely preserved (a total of 40 metres in length), with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">maximum\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">power<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">, at certain points, of up to three rows of ashlars.\u00a0<\/span>It was also verified that the tower located at the southeast end of the complex had twice the area initially verified, going from 50 to 100 m<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">The 2020 archaeological fieldwork will also focus on the southern sector of the site, aiming <strong>to\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\"><strong>complete the delimitation begun in 2019<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">and to describe this section of the archaeological site.\u00a0<\/span>With this delimitation, site excavation works could practically be completed.\u00a0Thus,\u00a0the 2021 campaign (corresponding to the last year of the four-year-long project) would focus above all on the consolidation of structures.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">Although the archaeological site is very severed and retains very little stratigraphy, the 2020 planned archaeological works will lead to <strong>the complete restoration of the plant\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">and the structure of the military building<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">, which corresponds to a characteristic settlement model of the Roman-Republican period in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Besides the Catalan Government funding, the archaeological fieldwork has the <strong>financial support of the City Council of La Secuita <\/strong>(Tarragona).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48032\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48032\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48032\" src=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Costa-Serra-2019-5_muralla-sud_voluntaris-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Costa de la Serra, campanya 2019.
