The new GIAP<\/a> archaeological campaign\u00a0in the Pyrenees has started with archaeological survey and trial excavation tasks in new archaeological sites\u00a0registered at headwaters of the Duran river and in Coll de Mulleres (Meranges, Cerdanya).<\/p>\n

The research team wants thus to\u00a0<\/span>expand the number of known deposits and dated them, so they can work with more data on the history of high-mountain <\/span>human occupation\u00a0<\/span>in this area of the Pyrenees<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Archaeological works will be carried out from July 22 and 31, under the direction of\u00a0Josep Maria\u00a0Palet<\/a>, director of the ICAC,\u00a0L\u00eddia\u00a0Colominas<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Abel Gallego<\/a>. There are also in the team\u00a0Arnau Carbonell,\u00a0Paloma\u00a0Aliende<\/a>\u00a0and Valentina\u00a0Pescini;\u00a0students\u00a0Jes\u00fas Mart\u00ednez and Mariona Montes;\u00a0and the volunteer Fran\u00e7ois\u00a0Ricou.<\/p>\n

Preliminary results of the first\u00a0trial excavations\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>Bac\u00a0<\/span>de\u00a0<\/span>Puigpedr\u00f3s\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>Engorgs<\/span>) provide early signs of pre-Roman presence in the site<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the framework of the research project\u00a0“Archaeology of cultural mountain landscapes in the headwaters of rivers Ter and Segre (Ripoll\u00e8s, Cerdanya)”<\/a>,\u00a0summer 2019 the team made six diagnostic trial excavations in two archaeological sites: Duran I\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>Coll\u00a0<\/span>de\u00a0<\/span>Molleres\u00a0<\/span>I.\u00a0<\/span>The works yielded very interesting results, which <\/span>show how this high\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>mountain\u00a0<\/span>occupation\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Meranges\u00a0<\/span>area\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>began in the Neolithic era and extended to the Modern era<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking these results into account,\u00a0the 2020 campaign seeks to obtain\u00a0more data on the history of human occupation in Cerdanya<\/strong>, through surveys and trial excavations in new archaeological sites.\u00a0It is important to expand the corpus of available information and provide new data for the study of an aspect as important as knowing the origin of the great transhumance in this sector of the Pyrenees and the territorial establishment of\u00a0<\/span>Iulia\u00a0<\/span><\/em>Libica<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>Ll\u00edvia<\/span>) regarding control and exploitation of high mountain areas<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
