{"id":48616,"date":"2020-08-01T23:06:55","date_gmt":"2020-08-01T21:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.icac.cat\/en\/?p=48616"},"modified":"2023-02-15T17:48:02","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T16:48:02","slug":"costa-de-la-serra-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/actualitat\/noticies\/2020\/costa-de-la-serra-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Recent archaeological works in Costa de la Serra (La Secuita, Tarragona) allows defining the southern fa\u00e7ade of the fortification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last July 17, 2020 archaeological campaign in Costa de la Serra (La\u00a0Secuita, Tarragona)\u00a0ended.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">For three weeks, a small group\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">ICAC\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">researchers<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">, students from the inter-university master&#8217;s degree in Classical Archaeology and volunteers have been working hard to define the southern limit of the fortification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">Recent works bear out preliminary results obtained in the 2019 intervention, with the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">discovery of a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">more complex\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\"><strong>defensive system<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">than expected from the excavations carried out between 2015 and 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">The new intervention confirms that the reservoir Southern closing would be defended\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">by\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">a double wall<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">, with two walls of about 1 m wide that run in p<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">arallel through 50 m.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48599\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48599\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48599\" src=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Costa-de-la-Serra-2020-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Fotografia general de la fa\u00e7ana sud de la fortificaci\u00f3, on es pot observar el tra\u00e7at de la doble muralla que discorre paral\u00b7lela en direcci\u00f3 sud-oest\/nord-est. Els treballs de la campanya 2020 s\u2019han centrat en l\u2019extrem est (dreta).\" width=\"790\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Costa-de-la-Serra-2020-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Costa-de-la-Serra-2020-1-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Overview of the fortification&#8217;s south fa\u00e7ade, where you can see the layout of the double wall that runs in parallel southwest\/northeast. 2020 archaeological works focused on the east end (right).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The area intervened in this year campaign<span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">\u00a0is one of the most well-preserved in the settlement, with the wall being preserved at certain points up to 1 m in altitude and three courses of ashlars.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"destacat-entrevista dreta\">\n<div class=\"small-text\">\n<p><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">The excavated deposits have provided many materials,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">especially\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">ceramic,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">but also constructive, which will allow us to better understand what life was like for the occupants of the fortification.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Among the findings highlights the\u00a0<strong>location of interesting shards of\u00a0<em>opus\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>signinum<\/em> lining<\/strong>,\u00a0with grooves forming geometric motifs, which probably belonged to some architectural decoration or to a great ashlars demolition, or they\u00a0could have been part of the wall or maybe of another constructive element.<\/p>\n<p>Overall research in this archaeological area is part of a broader project funded by the Catalan government (<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/recerca\/projectes-de-recerca\/projecte\/formes-docupacio-del-territori-i-evolucio-del-poblament-a-la-cessetania-occidental-durant-la-protohistoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four-year-long project<\/a>\u00a0call), led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/cbelarte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dr Maria Carme Belarte<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(ICREA-ICAC) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jcanela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dr Joan Canela<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(ICAC), on the evolution and population of Western Cessetani settlements.
