The Catalan Institute of Classical Archeology edits the posthumous work of Rosa Mar\u00eda Mercado Guirado<\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n

This new ICAC 2021 publication,\u00a0An\u00e1lisis arqueom\u00e9trico de elementos numism\u00e1ticos arg\u00e9nteos en el nordeste peninsular<\/em><\/a>, studies composition and origin of the silver used to mint Greek coins and other objects found in the archaeological sites of Mas Castellar, Puig de Sant Andreu, Castellet de Banyoles and Emp\u00faries (all of them, in Catalonia).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the study, the author carried out different archaeometry techniques<\/strong>, such as X-ray fluorescence and lead isotope analysis, in order to determine the degree of impact of Mediterranean peoples among the indigenous population.<\/p>\n

This publication is been reviewed by TFM coordinators\u00a0Maria Carme Belarte<\/a> (ICREA-ICAC) and Ignacio Montero<\/a> (CSIC-CCHS). There is also a prologue by prof. N\u00faria Rafel <\/a>(University of Lleida), Rosa M. Mercado’s mentor in her university stage.<\/p>\n

As we can read in the note to the edition<\/a>, by\u00a0M. Carme Belarte<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Bajo la iniciativa de amigos y compa\u00f1eros\u00a0de m\u00e1ster de Rosa, y con el soporte de la\u00a0direcci\u00f3n del ICAC, los codirectores del trabajo\u00a0impulsamos la publicaci\u00f3n de este estudio, tanto\u00a0por el inter\u00e9s cient\u00edfico de sus resultados como\u00a0por la voluntad de rendir un homenaje a la autora.<\/p>\n

Lamentablemente, la muerte repentina de\u00a0Rosa hab\u00eda sobrevenido sin darle tiempo a revisar\u00a0o incorporar las observaciones realizadas\u00a0por la comisi\u00f3n que evalu\u00f3 su estudio. Esta tarea de revisi\u00f3n se ha realizado, pues, a posteriori,\u00a0pero se ha optado por publicar el trabajo respetando\u00a0la estructura y contenido que hab\u00eda elegido\u00a0la autora, y aplicando tan solo las correcciones\u00a0absolutamente imprescindibles.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the prologue, prof. N\u00faria Rafel<\/strong>\u00a0introduces how the author, Rosa M. Mercado, explains “lead isotope analytics began to labor its way into archeology in the 1960s and, after various controversies, is now happily implanted in any archaeometallurgical study that claims to be complete”.<\/p>\n

Desde esta perspectiva, la de la procedencia del metal, la autora examina el monetario de plata del nordeste peninsular analizado isot\u00f3picamente hasta la fecha, y aporta como datos complementarios el estudio anal\u00edtico de algunas piezas de plata de uso personal. (…) Todo ello permite a la autora alcanzar conclusiones significativas, entre las cuales resultan relevantes la constataci\u00f3n de la frecuencia de mezclas de plata y el esfuerzo realizado para identificar posibles fuentes de dichas mezclas.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Publishing this volume would not have been possible without the support of Rosa’s TFM co-directors, the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology<\/a>, the Department of History of the University of Lleida<\/strong><\/a>, the Association of Young Researchers of Archeology of Tarragona (AJIAT), and Iltirta Archeology<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The book is the result of the initiative of Rosa M.’s colleagues who, dealing with the pain caused by her unfortunate and excessively premature death, decided to pay her this heartfelt tribute. Thus, and thanks to the support of family, partner, and friends, this work has been able to come to reality. This presentation cannot be finished without making a deserved recognition of the effort, time, and patience that Rosa M. Mercado dedicated to this research.<\/p>\n
