An ambitious project to create a new tool that will allow using the 3D morphology of grains to distinguish agricultural regimes.<\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n

Archaeobotany and the study of seeds and grains can be very frustrating, especially when compared to other\u00a0bioarchaeological\u00a0disciplines, like zooarchaeology. Let\u00a0us\u00a0explain: when you have an animal bone you can get all sorts of information. You can tell what animal it is, but also,\u00a0the sex, age, whether\u00a0the animal\u00a0had suffered pathologies during its lifetime, whether\u00a0the discarded bone\u00a0was chewed by dogs, other animals,\u00a0whether it was\u00a0processed and turned\u00a0into an artifact, whether it was cut in a particular way that can reveal certain technologies, and the list grows longer. So, a bone bears so much wonderful information that can tell you straightaway a whole story.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seeds, however, are tricky!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Without more detailed analysis that often destroy the seeds\u00a0completely, there is a\u00a0relatively\u00a0limited amount of information that can be extracted simply from their morphology.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

With this in mind, Alexandra\u00a0Livarda<\/a>\u00a0(GIAP) i\u00a0Alexandra\u00a0Kriti<\/a>\u00a0set out an ambitious project to create a new tool that will allow the team to use the 3D morphology of grains to distinguish agricultural regimes<\/strong>, but also landraces and all sorts of other types of information!<\/p>\n

Different aspects of this project are financed by an\u00a0<\/span>I+D<\/span>+i<\/span>\u00a0project (<\/span>DarkRevisited<\/span>, PI\u00a0<\/span>Dr<\/span>\u00a0Alexandra\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Livarda<\/span><\/a>) and two\u00a0<\/span>Marie\u00a0<\/span>Sk\u0142odowska<\/span>-Curie Action<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>projects (iShape3DSeed,\u00a0<\/span>Dr<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Cemre<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00dcst\u00fcnkaya<\/span>, supervisor\u00a0<\/span>Dr<\/span>\u00a0Hector A.\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Orengo<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>DarkSeeds<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Dr<\/span>\u00a0Charlotte\u00a0<\/span>Diffey<\/span>, supervisor\u00a0<\/span>Dr<\/span>\u00a0Alexandra\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Livarda<\/span><\/a>). Alexandra Kriti<\/a> has recently joined the ICAC\u00a0<\/span>as a PhD candidate.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first\u00a0<\/span>step for the creation of our new tool is experimental cultivations<\/strong>!\u00a0<\/span>Dr<\/span>\u00a0Giannis\u00a0<\/span>Mylonas<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Dr<\/span>\u00a0Elisa\u00a0<\/span>Ninou<\/span>\u00a0are the agronom<\/span>ist<\/span>\u00a0collaborators that oversee the experiment, which is based at the Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources (IPBGR)<\/a> at\u00a0<\/span>Thermi<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Thessalonikis<\/span>, north\u00a0<\/span>Greece.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the numerous obstacles posed by the pandemic, the team managed to successfully sow the grains of 22 traditional accessions of barley from across the Aegean in the autumn of 2020, under a combination of different agricultural regimes (different levels of irrigation and maturing).\u00a0Now in June it is time to harvest the grains!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Alexandra Kriti<\/a> has been in the field, overseeing and tending the\u00a0<\/span>experimental\u00a0<\/span>plots\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>ince\u00a0<\/span>this last\u00a0<\/span>April<\/span>. She has been observing, measuring, and monitoring the plants as they have been growing to better understand the resulting morphology, which\u00a0<\/span><\/span>has been quite a task<\/span>!\u00a0<\/span>L<\/span>eading to harvest season, the weather became very unstable,\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0heavy rainfalls and strong winds that are not characteristic of the area (Thessaloniki),\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>the current season<\/span>, delaying the harvest and putting the plants at risk.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the difficulties, the experiment is moving on and the team is particularly\u00a0<\/span>happy\u00a0<\/span>to report that the harvest season has now\u00a0<\/span>finally\u00a0<\/span>begun! Soon, they will have collected more than a thousand barley ears from the experimental barley fields, which will allow the team to move on to the next stage of the experiment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stay tuned to learn more\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>how<\/span>\u00a0the team is\u00a0<\/span>developing this new methodology<\/strong>, which will be involving all sorts of\u00a0<\/span>3D\u00a0<\/span>scanning,\u00a0<\/span>3D GMM,\u00a0<\/span>measurements, charring experiments, more measurements, isotopes, algorithms, and machine learning!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
