The\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Protocol<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span><\/span>approved at the end of December 2020. The first half of 2021 efforts have been put into its application and the implementation of the main prevention measures.<\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n

I<\/span><\/span>n September 2018, at the 25th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists, in Barcelona, it was communicated a study on sexual harassment in archaeology; especially in the academic sphere, and fieldwork (a very frequent activity in the discipline of archaeology)<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The event\u00a0brought together thousands of specialists from around the world. The study data collected numerous testimonies, especially in Spain, but also in Catalonia. In this way, it opened a can of warms, silenced for too long, and gave more visibility to a problem that seriously affects women, especially young people, in the training and early stages of their research careers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A year before, the media also echoed reports of sexual abuse suffered by students in archaeological excavations at a Spanish university. University archaeology was no longer as calm as oil in a plate, as so many people had taken for granted.<\/p>\n

The ICAC Protocol has a multipurpose perspective, which includes the detection, prevention, and definition of actions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The\u00a0Protocol of the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology for preventing, identifying and taking action to combat sexual
\nharassment <\/a>and harassment based on\u00a0sex, gender identity, and\/or sexual\u00a0<\/span><\/span>orientation that we present is born from the awareness of this true social scourge, which is gradually becoming more visible, also in the field of research.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The action is part of the HRS4R strategy<\/strong> of the ICAC<\/a> (see here the Action Plan 2021-2023<\/a>) and responds to the ICAC willingness to guarantee gender equality and fight against violence and discrimination<\/strong> in the academic and labor spheres; an action also aligned with the Women and Science program<\/a> of the CERCA Institution<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An institutional commitment<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

The main objective of this protocol is to prevent conducts of sexual harassment at work that may occur in the ICAC<\/strong> and among the members belonging to the academic and labor community of the Institute, or on the occasion of interpersonal relationships that may be established with it, to act to eradicate them and sanction them, in addition to protecting and accompanying people who have seen their rights violated.<\/p>\n

With this\u00a0Protocol<\/a>, the Catalan\u00a0<\/span>Institute of Classical Archaeology states its zero-tolerance policy<\/strong> for<\/span><\/span>\u00a0sexual harassment, and harassment based on sex, gender identity and sexual orientation, for which it undertakes to:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    \n
  1. Formally declare and disseminate its rejection of all types of sexual harassment<\/strong> or harassment based on sex, gender identity and sexual orientation, in all its forms or manifestations.<\/li>\n
  2. Promote a culture of prevention<\/strong> against sexual harassment or harassment based on sex, gender identity and sexual orientation through training, information, and awareness-raising activities for the entire ICAC community.<\/li>\n
  3. Report<\/strong>, investigate and sanction any conduct that may constitute sexual harassment or harassment based on sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.<\/li>\n
  4. Give support and advise<\/strong> people who have been subjected to sexual harassment or harassment based on sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Prevention, detection, action<\/h5>\n

    This Protocol is a new tool that improves and qualifies the work environment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Prevention, detection, and action: these are the three main working lines.\u00a0Knowledge and awareness of the need to carry out important changes in attitudes to guarantee the inalienable right to work in a safe and respectful environment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    The\u00a0Protocol<\/a>\u00a0places special emphasis on prevention measures and awareness-raising actions among the ICAC community<\/strong>. The ICAC Equality Committee<\/a> is the body that leads and coordinates the design and implementation of these measures, ranging from the internal dissemination of the Protocol to the commemoration of international celebrations such as the 11F or 25N.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    In the first semester of 2021, efforts have focused on the development of a Practical Guide<\/a><\/strong> to the Protocol and its distribution among ICAC staff so that they are aware of the existence of the Protocol and can make use of it if they need it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
