Archaeology of port systems&#8217; is the title of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tarracobiennal.com\/5cong\/index_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5th International Conference on Archaeology and Ancient World Tarraco Biennal<\/a>, which will take place in Tarragona from <strong>November 24 to 27<\/strong>, in the Aula Magna of URV &#8211; Campus Catalunya (under the COVID security measures).<\/p>\n<p>The conference was to be held in November 2020, but it was postponed due to the Covid health emergency. Now it is being recovered under the joint organization of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICAC), and under the direction of <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/alasheras\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ada Lasheras<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jruizdearbulo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joaqu\u00edn Ruiz de Arbulo<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/pterrado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patricia Terrado<\/a>. The meeting is held at the end of November to coincide with the date of the declaration of Tarraco as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.<\/p>\n<div class=\"destacat-entrevista dreta\">\n<div class=\"small-text\">\n<p>A conference with around twenty experts from different European research centres<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This fifth edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tarracobiennal.com\/5cong\/index_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tarraco Biennal<\/a> conference will explore <strong>the organization of the great ports<\/strong>, as well as the great maritime routes, along with the essential role in the transport of all kinds of people, products, and ideas throughout the Mediterranean. Leading experts on the subject from Catalonia and Spain will take part in the conference, which will also include the participation of specialists from France, Italy, England, Cyprus, Austria, and Poland. <strong>150 people have already registered<\/strong> to attend the conference.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The aim is to study the organisation of harbours, particularly focusing on their interconnected nature both at a local\/regional level and on a Mediterranean-wide scale. The objective is to analyse ports not just as built infrastructures, but also as nodes within a network of lesser regional harbours and anchorages \u2013 which configured \u201cport-systems\u201d \u2013 and crossroads of goods and people within the long-distance Mediterranean and Atlantic exchange routes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the press conference (last November 18), <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jruizdearbulo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joaqu\u00edn Ruiz de Arbulo<\/a> (URV-ICAC) and <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/pterrado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patr\u00edcia Terrado<\/a> stressed the will to \u2018publicize and share the latest research on ports, understood as systems and not just as simple structures\u2019. Recent technological advances and studies on the port of Tarraco have led the organizers to choose this topic.<\/p>\n<p>ICAC director, <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jpalet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Josep Maria Palet<\/strong><\/a>, underlined the will of Tarraco Bienal to \u2018<strong>disseminate the research to the whole of society<\/strong>\u2019 and to offer \u2018an image of unity of all institutions and entities that work in the field of archaeology in Tarragona, which cooperate to make these high-level scientific meeting possible\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p>Communications will be held on November 25 and 26 (morning and afternoon sessions). On Saturday 27, the meeting will close with cultural visits to the Museum of the Port of Tarragona and the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona (MNAT). Photo: ICAC.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/tarracobiennal.com\/5cong\/index_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tarraco Biennal<\/a> conference is an initiative started in 2012 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundaciomutuacatalana.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fundaci\u00f3 Privada M\u00fatua Catalana<\/a> with the aim of <strong>stating Tarragona as the capital of research and scientific studies in archaeology<\/strong>. Now, the direction of the conference falls to the URV and the ICAC, following the path of a scientific commission formed by all the local institutions related to archaeology and heritage: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarragona.cat\/patrimoni\/museu-historia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Museum of History of Tarragona<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnat.cat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona<\/a> (MNAT), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arqueologica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Tarragona Archaeological Society<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cultura.gencat.cat\/ca\/inici\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Culture of the Catalan Government<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquebisbattarragona.cat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archdiocese of Tarragona<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, URV and ICAC are satisfied with the \u2018very important echo\u2019 that the conclusions of each conference have got. The proceedings are published in paper and digital format and reach universities around the world.<\/p>\n<h6>Opening event, Wednesday 24 at 7 pm.<\/h6>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/tarracobiennal.com\/5cong\/index_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5th International Conference on Archaeology and Ancient World \u2018Tarraco Biennal\u2019<\/a> will open this <strong>Wednesday, November 24 at 7:00 pm<\/strong>\u00a0in an inaugural event at the URV (Campus Catalunya, Tarragona), open to the public. Authorities <strong>Maria Jos\u00e9 Figueras<\/strong>, rector of the URV; <strong>Pau Ricom\u00e0<\/strong>, mayor of Tarragona; and <strong>Josep Maria Cruset<\/strong>, president of the Port of Tarragona, will attend the event. Professor of Archaeology at the URV and ICAC researcher <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jruizdearbulo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joaqu\u00edn Ruiz de Arbulo<\/a><\/strong> will deliver the communication<em> Tarraco World Heritage and the Tarraco Biennal conference (2012-2021).
