New archaeological campaign in the steppes of Mongolia"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>GIAP researchers get involved in a new archaeological campaign in the steppes of Mongolia.<\/h6>\n<p>GIAP researchers <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/fcconesa\/\">Francesc C. Conesa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/acarbonell\/\">Arnau Carbonell<\/a>\u00a0have recently left Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia\u2019s capital, after setting up the final preparations for their field survey season starting in <strong>Z\u00fc\u00fcnkhangai Sum<\/strong>, Uvs province, in the north-western part of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The archaeological campaign belongs to the research project <a href=\"https:\/\/giap.icac.cat\/2021\/07\/26\/unraveling-nomadic-pastoralism-in-mongolia-in-the-bronze-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>&#8220;Arqueolog\u00eda del pastoralismo n\u00f3mada en Mongolia&#8221;<\/strong><\/a>, funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionpalarq.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fundaci\u00f3n Palarq<\/a> and led by <a href=\"https:\/\/portalciencia.ull.es\/investigadores\/82508\/detalle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Natalia Eg\u00fcez<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ull.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of La Laguna<\/a>, Spain), which studies the microscopic and molecular elements contained in the sediments recovered from archaeological sites related to domestic spaces, that is, the places where nomadic shepherds lived during the Bronze and Iron Ages.<\/p>\n<p>Along with <a href=\"https:\/\/portalciencia.ull.es\/investigadores\/82508\/detalle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Natalia Eg\u00fcez<\/a> (University of La Laguna), <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/fcconesa\/\">Conesa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/acarbonell\/\">Carbonell<\/a> are joining an international team together with Burentugs Ganbold (<a href=\"http:\/\/nationalmuseum.mn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Museum of Mongolia<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/ull.academia.edu\/JavierDavara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Javier Davara<\/a> (University of La Laguna), and <a href=\"https:\/\/es.linkedin.com\/in\/javiercorso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Javier Corso<\/a>, photographer and co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakstories.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oak Stories<\/a>. They set up the main camp in Z\u00fc\u00fcnkhangai\u2019s winter school to start the fieldwork campaign in the rich and ecologically diverse archaeological landscapes of the Z\u00fc\u00fcnkhangai region. It encompasses open grasslands to hilly dense forests, alluvial plains, and lakes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"destacat-entrevista dreta\">\n<div class=\"small-text\">\n<p>This is the first on-site archaeological campaign we have carried out in Asia after the pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As in other well-known Western and Central Mongolia regions, the area is dotted with hundreds of mortuary monuments dating back to the Late Bronze Age (1200-700 BC). The team will systematically survey potential seasonal herder campsites and habitational sites. In that regard, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352226722000228?dgcid=coauthor#f0005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the WMAP team recently published the first study on a multi-layered pastoralist habitation site in Z\u00fc\u00fcnkhangai<\/a> that shows a recurrent seasonal winter occupation from the mid-Holocene up to the present day. Photi by Natalia \u00c9g\u00fcez, University of La Laguna.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This field season arises as a new research collaboration between ICAC and the <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.ull.es\/ambilab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archaeological Micromorphology and Biomarkers Laboratory<\/a> of the University of La Laguna (Canary Islands, Spain), within the framework of the project \u201cArchaeology of nomadic pastoralism: the invisible imprints of domestic spaces\u201d led by Dr Natalia \u00c9g\u00fcez (University of La Laguna) and generously funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionpalarq.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palarq Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lhxY9IrTwbk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The project is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/westernmongoliaarchaeology.weebly.com\/\">Western Mongolia Archaeological Project<\/a> (WMAP), an ongoing and long-lasting research initiative of the National Museum of Mongolia and the Western Kentucky University led by Drs Bayarsaikhan Jamsranjav and Jean-Luc Houle, respectively.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p>This project led by Dr Natalia \u00c9g\u00fcez from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ull.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of La Laguna<\/a> is a collaboration between this institution, the <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalmuseum.mn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Museum of Mongolia<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catalan Institut of Classical Archaeology<\/a>.
