It will take place <strong>from 3 to 21 July 2023<\/strong>\u00a0at the Valencia &#8220;la Vella&#8221; archaeological site (next to Valencia).<\/h6>\n<p>The 6<strong>th Training Workshop on Christian and Visigoth Archaeology<\/strong> is a unique opportunity to learn about the basic methodology of archaeological excavation and analysis, but also to work on a very special site, such as that of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/recerca\/projectes-de-recerca\/projecte\/20942\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valencia &#8220;la Vella&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop program combines daily <strong>fieldwork<\/strong> at the site with tasks of <strong>analysis of the results<\/strong>, as well as various parallel activities (<strong>theoretical sessions and visits<\/strong> to sites in the surrounding area). The course offers training content specifically oriented toward Late Antique archaeology, its material culture, and its historical problems.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p>From <strong>July 3 to 21<\/strong>, the training workshop will alternate the excavation of the archaeological site of Valencia &#8220;la Vella&#8221; with hands-on tasks of washing and cataloging archaeological remains found, visits to other Late Ancient sites in the surrounding area, and some scientific talks on topics related to the Visigothic and Christian world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Programa-VI-curs-arqueologia-riba-roja_2023_CAS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>programme<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #d95016;\"><strong>Practical information:<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Openings:<\/strong> 12 Archaeology students (undergraduate or postgraduate). It is a walled enclave located on top of a hill in a spectacular location overlooking the River Turia, about 2 km from the Pla de Nadal palace and within the Turia River Natural Park.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2016, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ribarroja.es\/portal.portal.action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City Council of Riba-roja de Turia<\/a>\u00a0(Valencia) promotes an <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/recerca\/projectes-de-recerca\/projecte\/20942\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archaeological research<\/a> and heritage conservation and dissemination project developed by the\u00a0<strong>Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology<\/strong>\u00a0(under the direction of ICAC researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/jmmacias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josep Maria Macias<\/a>), with the support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dival.es\/es\/areadecultura\/content\/area-de-cultura\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valencia Provincial Council<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gva.es\/va\/inicio\/presentacion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Generalitat Valenciana<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"destacat-entrevista dreta\">\n<div class=\"small-text\">\n<p>Valencia \u00abla Vella\u00bb is an <em>ex novo<\/em> foundation that stands out for its walls that surround a river hill 20\/40 m high and that are reinforced by numerous towers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The settlement has been known since the 14th century and, partly due to its name, had been associated with the pre-Roman and Roman settlement <em>Pallantia<\/em>. Archaeological excavations in the seventies of the last century, motivated by partial destruction of the site, showed a Late Antiquity chronology.<\/p>\n<p>Valencia \u201cla Vella\u201d was once again removed from all scientific interests for decades. Currently, it is still an unknown and nameless city. It is an archaeological site yet to be discovered, although <strong>archaeological excavations firmly confirm its value and cultural potential, and historical relevance<\/strong>. It is a Visigothic city built \u201csuddenly\u201d 16 km from <em>Valentia<\/em>, during the second half of the 6th century and dominating the Turia river waterway.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p>In 2016 the ICAC posted online in open access <a href=\"https:\/\/skfb.ly\/osUKB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a collection of eleven 3D models of the Valencia \u201cla Vella\u201d site<\/a> on the<a href=\"https:\/\/skfb.ly\/osUKB\"><strong> Sketchfab<\/strong><\/a> platform:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sketchfab-embed-wrapper\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Old model (Digital terrain model)\" src=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/models\/abee825d158c4386ac90fc7918b7cd5b\/embed?ui_theme=dark\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px; font-weight: normal; margin: 5px; color: #4a4a4a;\"><a style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #1caad9;\" href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/3d-models\/old-model-digital-terrain-model-abee825d158c4386ac90fc7918b7cd5b?utm_medium=embed&amp;utm_campaign=share-popup&amp;utm_content=abee825d158c4386ac90fc7918b7cd5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Old model (Digital terrain model) <\/a> by <a style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #1caad9;\" href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/ICAC?utm_medium=embed&amp;utm_campaign=share-popup&amp;utm_content=abee825d158c4386ac90fc7918b7cd5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> ICAC <\/a> on <a style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #1caad9;\" href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com?utm_medium=embed&amp;utm_campaign=share-popup&amp;utm_content=abee825d158c4386ac90fc7918b7cd5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sketchfab<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Within the framework of the research project coordinated by the ICAC,\u00a0<strong>seven archaeological campaigns<\/strong> have been carried out at the site. The first four were integrated into the Christian and Visigothic Archeology courses, where over twenty students and graduates from around the world participated.
