Calafell welcomes the IX Calafell International Archeology Meeting, next March 30 to April 1.<\/h6>\n

Calafell <\/span>City Council<\/span><\/span><\/a> is one of the organiz<\/span>ing institutions <\/span>of this<\/span> scientific m<\/span>eeting<\/span> in its <\/span>ninth edition (the last one was in October 2016)<\/span>. The event will <\/span>take place between Calafell and Banyeres del Pened\u00e8s (Tarragona).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The 2023 edition is a tribute to Henri Tr\u00e9ziny<\/strong> and is dedicated in memoriam<\/em> to Joan Sanmart\u00ed<\/strong>, who was one of the driving forces behind this scientific meeting.<\/p>\n

Pre-Roman Urban Fortifications in the western Mediterranean<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n

The IX Calafell International Archeology Meeting goes under the topic “Pre-Roman urban fortifications in the Western Mediterranean: origin, functions, and structural evolution”, aiming to update discussion on the Iberian culture and the areas of contact: Phoenician and Greek cultures.<\/p>\n

The 2023 edition focuses on the role of defensive architecture in the Iberian <\/span>culture.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The ICAC has been participating since 2004 in the organization of this international con<\/span>ference<\/span>, which has always revolved around Iberian culture<\/span> through <\/span>different <\/span>specific topics<\/span>, such as architectural reconstruction, the formation of complex societies in the <\/span>W<\/span>estern Mediterranean, or agricultural economics and social change.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Through the study of urban fortifications, the <\/span>scientific meeting <\/span>explores the relationship between the Iberian <\/span>culture<\/span> and its contact areas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sessions will take place at Calafell (Centre C\u00edvic Cinema Iris, Platja de Calafell<\/a>)<\/p>\n

First day <\/span>opening session <\/span>states t<\/span>his willingness to offer <\/span><\/span>an overview of the three most important pre-Roman cultures of the <\/span>W<\/span>estern Mediterranean<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, with keynote speeches by <\/span><\/span>Silke M\u00fcth<\/span><\/span><\/a> <\/strong>(<\/span><\/span>Les fortifications des villes grecques et romaines : \u00e9volution et id\u00e9ologie<\/span><\/span>) and <\/span><\/span>Pierre Moret<\/span><\/span><\/a> <\/strong>(<\/span><\/span>Las fortificaciones ib\u00e9ricas, treinta a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s<\/span><\/span>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Moret is a great specialist on this subject and, since he published his doctoral thesis thirty years ago (1996), a global vision of defensive architecture in the Iberian culture has not been depicted again.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, <\/span><\/span>M\u00fcth <\/span><\/span><\/a>will put classical culture and fortifications in the Greco-Roman world into context. <\/span>And, <\/span>then<\/span>, with the global vision of <\/span><\/span>Moret <\/span><\/span><\/a>on the role of Iberian fortifications, it will be possible to see the comparison<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and <\/span>contact p<\/span>oints between the different cultures, <\/span>leading to a discussion on feasible <\/span>cultural exchange<\/span>s<\/span>, interactions, or divergences between the main pre-Roman cultures<\/span> in the <\/span>W<\/span>estern Mediterranean.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Maria Carme Belarte<\/a> (ICREA-ICAC) and David Montanero<\/a> (Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral researcher at the ICAC) are <\/span>membres <\/span>of the Organizing Committee for the IX Calafell International Arch<\/span>a<\/span>eology Meeting, <\/span>along with <\/span>Pierre Moret (Toulouse University) and Jaume Noguera (University of <\/span>Barcelona<\/span>)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
