The<\/span> event<\/span> “A Day in <\/span>Tarraco<\/span>” <\/span>successfully<\/span> consolidates<\/span> its<\/span> position<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> lineup<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> Tarraco<\/span> Viva Festival, <\/span>with<\/span> a series of <\/span>activities<\/span> aimed<\/span> at<\/span> high<\/span> school<\/span> students<\/span> organized<\/span> by<\/span> the<\/span> Association<\/span> of <\/span>Classics<\/span> Teachers<\/span> of <\/span>Catalonia<\/span> (APLEC).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n

On <\/span>Friday<\/span>, May 19th, <\/span>the<\/span> event<\/span> “A Day in <\/span>Tarraco<\/span>” <\/span>hosted<\/span> the<\/span> ceremony<\/span> for <\/span>the<\/span> 12th <\/span>edition<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> Odissea<\/span>\u00a0Awards<\/span><\/strong>, a <\/span>classical<\/span> culture<\/span> contest<\/span> celebrated<\/span> throughout<\/span> Spain <\/span>and<\/span> coordinated<\/span> in <\/span>Catalonia<\/span> by<\/span> the<\/span> APLEC <\/span>Association<\/span> (<\/span>Association<\/span> of <\/span>Classical<\/span> Languages<\/span> Teachers<\/span> of <\/span>Catalonia<\/span>). In <\/span>this<\/span> edition<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> contest<\/span> had<\/span> the<\/span> participation<\/span> of 473 <\/span>groups<\/span> from<\/span> Catalonia<\/span>, <\/span>totaling<\/span> over 1,000 <\/span>students<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> second<\/span> cycle<\/span> of ESO (<\/span>Compulsory<\/span> Secondary<\/span> Education<\/span>) <\/span>and<\/span> baccalaureate<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Approximately<\/span> 500 <\/span>students<\/span> from<\/span> 23 institutes in <\/span>Catalonia<\/span> attended<\/span> the<\/span> event<\/span>, <\/span>accompanied<\/span> by<\/span> their<\/span> teachers<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The<\/span> Catalan <\/span>Institute<\/span> of <\/span>Classical<\/span> Archaeology<\/span><\/a> (ICAC) is <\/span>one<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> sponsors of <\/span>the<\/span> contest<\/span>, <\/span>along<\/span> with<\/span> the<\/span> Catalan <\/span>Section<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span><\/a> SEEC (<\/span>Spanish<\/span> Society<\/span> of <\/span>Classical<\/span> Studies<\/span>), <\/span>the<\/span> Catalan <\/span>Society<\/span> of <\/span>Classical<\/span> Studies<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> IEC, <\/span>the<\/span> Museum<\/span> of <\/span>Archaeology<\/span> of <\/span>Catalonia<\/span><\/a> (MAC), <\/span>and<\/span> the<\/span> Iberia <\/span>Graeca<\/span> Center<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>The<\/span> contest<\/span> also<\/span> has <\/span>the<\/span> collaboration<\/span> of La Casa dels Cl\u00e0ssics<\/a>, <\/span>the<\/span> Revista Auriga<\/a>, <\/span>the<\/span> ICE of <\/span>the<\/span><\/a> UAB (<\/span>Autonomous<\/span> University of Barcelona), <\/span>the<\/span> Department<\/span> of <\/span>Education<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> Government<\/span> of <\/span>Catalonia<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>and<\/span> the<\/span> Editorial Casals<\/a><\/span>. <\/span>The<\/span> event<\/span> was<\/span> presided<\/span> over <\/span>by<\/span> Jordi <\/span>Giram\u00e9<\/span> and<\/span> Mag\u00ed <\/span>Seritjol<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> Tarraco<\/span> Viva Festival; Xavier Y\u00e1\u00f1ez, <\/span>head<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> Secondary<\/span> and<\/span> Baccalaureate<\/span> Curriculum<\/span> Service of <\/span>the<\/span> Government<\/span> of <\/span>Catalonia;<\/span>\u00a0Txell <\/span>Blay<\/span> and<\/span> Xavi <\/span>Tresserra,<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> APLEC <\/span>Association;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span> Josep Maria Palet<\/a>, director of <\/span>the<\/span> ICAC.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mag\u00ed <\/span>Seritjol<\/span><\/strong>, director of <\/span>the<\/span> Tarraco<\/span> Viva Festival, <\/span>addressed<\/span> the<\/span> attendees<\/span> and<\/span> encouraged<\/span> them<\/span> to be <\/span>captivated<\/span> by<\/span> the<\/span> classical<\/span> world<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> legacy<\/span> of Roman <\/span>culture<\/span> in <\/span>Tarraco<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> the<\/span> value<\/span> of <\/span>humanities<\/span>. He <\/span>also<\/span> expressed<\/span> gratitude<\/span> for <\/span>the<\/span> support<\/span> of <\/span>high<\/span> school<\/span> teachers<\/span> to <\/span>the<\/span> project<\/span> ‘A Day in <\/span>Tarraco’<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>which<\/span>, in <\/span>its<\/span> second<\/span> edition<\/span>, <\/span>surpassed<\/span> the<\/span> attendance<\/span> success<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> pilot test <\/span>with<\/span> over 750 <\/span>registrations<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Finally<\/span>, <\/span>about<\/span> 550 <\/span>students<\/span> from<\/span> 28 secondary schools in <\/span>Catalonia<\/span> attended<\/span> the<\/span> event<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>This<\/span> remarkable<\/span> turnout<\/span> demonstrates<\/span> the<\/span> interest<\/span> in <\/span>classical<\/span> culture<\/span> among<\/span> young<\/span> people<\/span> and<\/span> the<\/span> important <\/span>role<\/span> that<\/span> the<\/span> Tarraco<\/span> Viva Festival can play in <\/span>the<\/span> educational<\/span> field<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During<\/span> the<\/span> award<\/span> ceremony<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> Odysseus<\/span> Contest<\/span> 2023, <\/span>there<\/span> were<\/span> lively<\/span> displays of <\/span>congratulations<\/span> and<\/span> well-wishing<\/span> to <\/span>the<\/span> winning<\/span> colleagues<\/span>. <\/span>It<\/span> was<\/span> a <\/span>joyful<\/span> day<\/span> that<\/span> began<\/span> with<\/span> an<\/span> epigraphic<\/span> scavenger<\/span> hunt<\/span> and<\/span> continued<\/span> with<\/span> a <\/span>historical<\/span> reenactment<\/span> show <\/span>about<\/span> the<\/span> Roman legions. In <\/span>the<\/span> afternoon<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> participants <\/span>could<\/span> enjoy<\/span> various<\/span> theatrical<\/span> historical<\/span> recreations<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> activity<\/span> “Monuments of <\/span>Tarraco<\/span>,” <\/span>this<\/span> year<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> amphitheater<\/span> and<\/span> the<\/span> city<\/span> walls<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An<\/span> exclusive<\/span> epigraphic<\/span> itinerary<\/span> for <\/span>the<\/span> winning<\/span> groups<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

In <\/span>the<\/span> 12th <\/span>edition<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> Odissea<\/span>\u00a0Awards<\/span><\/strong> and<\/span> the<\/span> return<\/span> to <\/span>normalcy<\/span> after<\/span> the<\/span> pandemic<\/span> restrictions<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> ICAC <\/span>offered<\/span> the<\/span> winning<\/span> groups<\/span> a <\/span>very<\/span> special<\/span> activity<\/span>: <\/span>an<\/span> epigraphic<\/span> itinerary<\/span> through<\/span> the<\/span> Upper<\/span> Part of Tarragona <\/span><\/strong>led<\/span> by<\/span> two<\/span> members<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> ArPA<\/span>-LIRA <\/span>research<\/span> group<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> ICAC, <\/span>accompanied<\/span> by<\/span> transfer<\/span> technician<\/span> Ada <\/span>Richaud<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> walk<\/span>, <\/span>titled<\/span> “<\/span>From<\/span> Letter<\/span> to Stone: <\/span>Epigraphic<\/span>, Monumental, <\/span>and<\/span> Heritage<\/span> Itinerary<\/span> of <\/span>Ancient<\/span> Tarraco<\/span>,” <\/span>guided<\/span> the<\/span> students<\/span> and<\/span> their<\/span> teachers<\/span> through<\/span> various<\/span> points<\/span> of <\/span>interest<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> streets<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> Upper<\/span> Part of Tarragona, <\/span>allowing<\/span> them<\/span> to <\/span>reflect<\/span> on <\/span>the<\/span> historical<\/span> characters<\/span> of <\/span>Tarraco<\/span>, <\/span>their<\/span> interpretation<\/span> from<\/span> a <\/span>gender<\/span> perspective<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> role<\/span> of social classes in Roman <\/span>times<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> preservation<\/span> of pedestals (<\/span>wear<\/span>, <\/span>graffiti<\/span>…), <\/span>and<\/span> the<\/span> cultural <\/span>heritage<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> city<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Interestingly<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> team<\/span> that<\/span> won<\/span> the<\/span> first<\/span> prize<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> contest<\/span> consisted<\/span> of <\/span>two<\/span> boys, <\/span>while<\/span> the<\/span> majority<\/span> of <\/span>classical<\/span> studies<\/span> students<\/span> are<\/span> girls<\/span>. In <\/span>fact<\/span>, <\/span>among<\/span> the<\/span> twenty<\/span> students<\/span> who<\/span> went<\/span> up on <\/span>stage<\/span> to <\/span>receive<\/span> the<\/span> awards<\/span>, <\/span>there<\/span> were<\/span> only<\/span> four<\/span> boys.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
