{"id":86716,"date":"2023-07-18T12:06:19","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T10:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/icac.cat\/?p=86716"},"modified":"2023-07-18T16:44:08","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T14:44:08","slug":"iesso-2023-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/actualitat\/noticies\/2023\/iesso-2023-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring Roman Life: 17th Guissona Archaeology Course Unearths New Discoveries"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>On July 14th, the 17th edition of the Roman City of Iesso Archaeology Course in Guissona concluded.<\/h6>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/es\/actualitat\/noticies\/2023\/xvii-curso-arqueologia-iesso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roman City of Iesso Archaeology Course<\/a> brought together students, researchers, and professionals in its 17th edition, combining educational and research components linked to the <em>Iesso<\/em> research project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uab.cat\/web\/el-departament\/professorat\/directori\/professorat-1345696098292.html?param1=null&amp;param2=1345742138936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N\u00faria Roman\u00ed<\/a> (UAB) is the leading researcher of the <em>Iesso<\/em> project (four-year project <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/recerca\/projectes-de-recerca\/projecte\/ciutat-romana-de-iesso-guissona\/\">CLT009\/22\/00039<\/a>), along with <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/staff\/jguitart\/\">Josep Guitart<\/a> (UAB-ICAC).<\/p>\n<p>Have a look at the following video, where N\u00faria provides details about the 2023 campaign, which focused mainly on two sectors of the Roman City of <em>Iesso<\/em>: one area situated at the intersection of two streets (between a <em>cardo<\/em> and a <em>decumanus<\/em>), and, as it happened a few years ago, the thermal baths area. This year, a couple of rooms adjacent to the thermal building were added, although it is yet to be determined whether they are part of these baths or located in an external area.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/84ayBPKyY8Q\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p>A group of 13 students took part in the 17th edition of the Guissona Archaeology Course. Photo: ICAC (CC 4.0).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As the most exceptional element, <strong>a well has also been excavated in a domestic area of a large <em>domus<\/em><\/strong>, which will be highly interesting because it will provide information about elements that are not typically preserved in land excavations, primarily organic materials such as wood, seeds, and other elements that will reveal a lot about daily life in ancient <em>Iesso<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p>A significant amount of new material has been extracted from a well located within the manor house, which was fully excavated last week, reaching a depth of up to seven meters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>What is so special about this well? In the words of Patxi and Eric, from the company <a href=\"http:\/\/arqueolegs.cat\/ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Arqueolegs.cat<\/strong><\/a>, &#8220;The well is filled with soil and water, or what we call mud&#8221;. This composition contributes to the preservation of many organic materials that cannot be identified in other contexts. It&#8217;s worth noting that the extraction of these materials is quite challenging. Photo: ICAC (CC 4.0).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/tbaniou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Theoni Baniou<\/strong><\/a>, GIAP PhD researcher, Theoni Baniou, has been responsible for filtering and cleaning the baskets brought from the well, using the technique known as &#8220;wet sieving&#8221;, in order to identify these remains (charcoal, bones, seeds, etc.) and study them later in the ICAC laboratory, as part of her doctoral thesis <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/recerca\/projectes-de-recerca\/projecte\/exploring-roman-tastes-an-archaeobotanical-and-network-analysis-approach-to-the-investigation-of-food-plant-access-commerce-and-social-identities\/\">Exploring Roman tastes: an archaeobotanical and network analysis approach to the investigation of food plant access, commerce, and social identities<\/a>, which she is conducting with a scholarship from ICAC (CIN21).<\/p>\n<p>This screening technique is highly effective for identifying very small remains that go unnoticed by the naked eye. In fact, during the excavation, sieves of different gauges (5 mm, 1 mm, and 0.2 mm) were used, allowing the recovery of materials as tiny as seeds, pottery, snail shells, animal bones, and charcoal.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure the preservation of the recovered materials, after the screening, the archaeologists stored them in bags filled with deionized water to maintain an atmosphere similar to what they had when they were in the well. As a result, the materials discarded by the inhabitants of that time have been preserved in the sediments for 2,000 years. Photo: ICAC (CC 4.0).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Within the framework of the Guissona Archaeology Course, <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/tbaniou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Theoni Baniou<\/strong><\/a> gave a talk to the students involved in the 17th edition.
