{"id":86862,"date":"2023-07-26T14:00:53","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T12:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/icac.cat\/?p=86862"},"modified":"2023-07-26T15:27:46","modified_gmt":"2023-07-26T13:27:46","slug":"valencia-la-vella-results-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/actualitat\/noticies\/2023\/valencia-la-vella-results-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Archaeological excavations at the Valencia &#8220;la Vella&#8221; site unveil the presence of an ancient mint in the city"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>Archaeological works carried out by the group of experts and students states the urban and military character of this prominent settlement in the Mediterranean.<\/h6>\n<p>The archaeological excavations that have been carried out at the Visigothic site of Valencia &#8220;la Vella,&#8221; in Riba-roja de T\u00faria (Val\u00e8ncia), suggest the existence of a workshop for coin minting in this area, following the discovery of new specimens during the study and exploration sessions conducted in the zone.<\/p>\n<div class=\"destacat-entrevista dreta\">\n<div class=\"small-text\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Additionally, North African amphorae from the 6th century have also been recovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Over the past few weeks, the archaeological works have led to the <strong>recovery of more than 50 legally used coins<\/strong> from the Visigothic era in Riba-roja de T\u00faria. Among them, some were minted in the Italy of the Ostrogothic kingdom, others originated from present-day Tunisia, and there are also some crafted during the periods of Vandal and Byzantine occupations, as well as other pieces from various areas of the Iberian Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of these 50 coins in the area was made possible thanks to the efforts of expert archaeologists and students participating in the 6th Course of Visigothic and Christian Archaeology in Valencia &#8220;la Vella&#8221;. 2023 archaeological campaign ran under the coordination of <span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/aribera\/\">Albert Ribera<\/a><\/span>, with archaeological direction by <span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/ocaldes\/\">\u00d2scar Cald\u00e9s<\/a><\/span>, <span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/jmmacias\/\">Josep Maria Macias<\/a><\/span>, and Miquel Rossell\u00f3, and the technical team of <span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/amunozv\/\">Andreu Mu\u00f1oz<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/jpuche\/\">Josep Maria Puche<\/a><\/span>. Moreover, the works have focused on the typological identification of the abundant ceramic findings at the site in this edition, dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries AD.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-86828\" src=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Valencia-la-Vella-2023_fotos-Macias_monedestroballes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Valencia-la-Vella-2023_fotos-Macias_monedestroballes.jpg 900w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Valencia-la-Vella-2023_fotos-Macias_monedestroballes-400x252.jpg 400w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Valencia-la-Vella-2023_fotos-Macias_monedestroballes-768x484.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p>The eighth edition of the archaeological excavations at Valencia &#8220;la Vella&#8221; has been made possible thanks to the funding from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ribarroja.es\/portal.portal.action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City Council of Riba-roja de T\u00faria<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dival.es\/content\/ciutadania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valencia Provincial Government<\/a>, in collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/icac.cat\/es\/recerca\/projectes-de-recerca\/projecte\/20942\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICAC-CERCA)<\/a> and the <span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fau.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friedrich Alexander Universit\u00e4t-Erlangen-N\u00fcrnberg<\/a><\/span>, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.us.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Seville<\/a>, for complementary research activities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The archaeological works this year have focused on intensifying field studies of the main areas where the Visigothic city was divided, based on three delimited sectors due to the efforts conducted in recent years. In the highest area of the site, new blocks of stone have been discovered, embedded in a geological layer, covered by a circulation level formed by a street, the partial preservation of which is currently visible.<\/p>\n<p>With the <span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fau.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friedrich Alexander Universit\u00e4t-Erlangen-N\u00fcrnberg<\/a><\/span>, a <strong>geophysical survey<\/strong> was conducted on the intermediate platform of the Visigothic city. Through the survey, it was possible to determine the existence of different architectural spaces and a potential street in this area of the city.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-86845\" src=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Valencia-la-Vella-2023_fotos-Macias_resultats2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"972\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Valencia-la-Vella-2023_fotos-Macias_resultats2.jpg 972w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Valencia-la-Vella-2023_fotos-Macias_resultats2-400x281.jpg 400w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Valencia-la-Vella-2023_fotos-Macias_resultats2-768x540.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 972px) 100vw, 972px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the <span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Sevilla<\/a><\/span>, and the funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionpalarq.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palarq Foundation<\/a>, a project of <strong>selection and collection of samples of lime mortar has been carried out for Carbon-14 analysis<\/strong>. The dating using C-14 is conducted with the instrumental technique of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), using a 200kV MiCaDaS (Mini Carbon Dating System) available at the facilities of the National Accelerators Center in the Technology Park of Cartuja (Seville).<\/p>\n<p>In the so-called area 1,000 of the site, <strong>new interconnected storage silos have been found<\/strong>, indicating the presence of an underground system covering an area of at least 30 square meters. After the excavation efforts, the presence of a system of staircases and corridors connecting both zones of the Visigothic city has been confirmed. These discoveries lead us to deduce that it represents a distinctive characteristic of the Visigothic city, where not only the surrounding walls but also its own urban circulation were prominent features.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During <strong>a visit to the archaeological site, the Mayor of Riba-roja de T\u00faria, Robert Raga<\/strong>, emphasized &#8220;the remarkable work carried out by the expert archaeologists and students who have participated in the excavations, and edition after edition, have enabled us to uncover new specific discoveries about the Visigothic city that was predominant during the civilization of that era in the Mediterranean region.
