{"id":87545,"date":"2023-09-21T08:58:03","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T06:58:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/icac.cat\/?p=87545"},"modified":"2023-09-21T11:22:32","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T09:22:32","slug":"arpa-grevena-perna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/actualitat\/noticies\/2023\/arpa-grevena-perna\/","title":{"rendered":"Archaeological findings in Agios Georgios, Greece: ArPA-LIRA research group adds new clues to the region&#8217;s ancient history"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>Several members of the ArPA-LIRA research group at ICAC have traveled to the Grevena area in Greece to collaborate on an archaeological excavation and survey campaign in the village of Agios Georgios (Central Macedonia).<\/h6>\n<p>The fieldwork is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/GAP.archaeology\/photos\/?ref\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grevena Archaeological Project (GAP)<\/a>, driven by the <span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.culture.gov.gr\/en\/ministry\/SitePages\/viewyphresia.aspx?iID=1304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ephorate of the Antiquities of Grevena<\/a><\/span>, in which the ArPA-LIRA research group is collaborating to study and analyze marble finds in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agios_Georgios_(island)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agios Georgios<\/a> area and nearby villages, under the direction of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/sperna\/\">Simona Perna<\/a><\/strong> and the participation of <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/lgalan\/\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59169976 BCX8\">Laura <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW59169976 BCX8\">Galan<\/span><\/a><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW59169976 BCX8\"> and <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/qui-som\/personal\/hfeliu\/\">Hugo Feliu<\/a><\/span>, also from ArPA (with the support of SGR-2021-1365 ArPA-LIRA), and Owain Morris (an independent researcher and deputy director of the intervention).<\/p>\n<p>The modern village of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agios_Georgios_(island)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agios Georgios<\/a>, part of the municipality of Grevena in Western Macedonia, Greece, is approximately a 30-minute drive from the city of Grevena, the capital of the homonymous regional unit. Surrounded by mountains and rivers, including the Greveniotikos, which flows into the Alakmon River, this region has particular archaeological interest. <strong>Evidence of human presence here dates back to the Neolithic period and extends to the Ottoman era and beyond<\/strong>, as documented by variously identified necropolises, unspecified building structures, and sporadic discoveries of ceramics, metals, and stone.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-87523\" src=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-3-400x602.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-3-400x602.png 400w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-3-680x1024.png 680w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-3-768x1156.png 768w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-3.png 897w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The landscape is dominated by a nearby hill, Agios Nikolaos, which has previously provided intriguing evidence of human activity. Ayios Georgios and its surroundings have been the focus of recent archaeological research campaigns and fieldwork promoted by the <span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.culture.gov.gr\/en\/ministry\/SitePages\/viewyphresia.aspx?iID=1304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ephorate of the Antiquities of Grevena<\/a><\/span>, often <a href=\"https:\/\/giap.icac.cat\/2022\/04\/07\/an-unknown-settlement-a-greek-newspaper-echoes-our-grevena-project-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significantly involving the GIAP research group<\/a> from ICAC.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight-block\">\n<p>This new adventure follows the successful archaeological excavations and fieldwork carried out in the summers of 2021 and 2022, which led to <strong>the discovery of a late Roman wall and several pieces of marble<\/strong> in the vicinity known as Agros Batara, near Arsalia, approximately 2.4 kilometers from the village of Agios Georgios (Grevena).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The 2023 archaeological excavation will focus on two 5&#215;5-meter test trenches to the west and north of the previously discovered Roman wall, with the aim of assessing its direction, and boundaries and uncovering other possible structures.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-87529\" src=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-4b-1024x795.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"790\" height=\"613\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-4b-1024x795.png 1024w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-4b-400x310.png 400w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-4b-768x596.png 768w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-4b-1536x1192.png 1536w, https:\/\/icac.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ArPA-campanya-Agios-Georgios-2023-4b.png 1598w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The presence of numerous findings, including ceramics spanning from the late Hellenistic period to the late Roman and Ottoman periods, fragments of <em>dolia<\/em>, and construction materials such as tiles and bricks, suggests the presence of a rural dwelling or <em>villae<\/em>. Most of these artifacts likely belong to the Roman phase (1st century AD to 5th century AD).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Further confirmation of this hypothesis comes from the recent discovery of several mosaic tiles during the first week of fieldwork.<\/strong> Ongoing excavations have yielded more marble pieces, architectural elements&#8217; remains, and semi-finished products, in line with evidence from previous campaigns: stones belonging to a destroyed wall in the excavated trench, several marble pieces formed by construction remnants (chips), and semi-finished pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Fieldwork will be complemented by the analysis of marble finds preserved in Ephorate&#8217;s warehouses. These items will be cataloged, drawn, weighed, and interpreted.
