{"id":94502,"date":"2024-07-16T09:21:27","date_gmt":"2024-07-16T07:21:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/icac.cat\/?p=94502"},"modified":"2024-07-17T13:30:33","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T11:30:33","slug":"trama-11-ceramics-torre-onda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/actualitat\/noticies\/2024\/trama-11-ceramics-torre-onda\/","title":{"rendered":"Trade and culture on the Valencian coast: new publication on the ceramics of Torre d\u2019Onda (Burriana, Castell\u00f3n) in the Ibero-Roman period"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/services\/publications\/presentation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICAC-CERCA Publications Service<\/a> is pleased to announce the launch of the digital book <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/serveis\/publicacions\/llibre\/trama-11-torre-onda\/\"><em>La cer\u00e1mica de Torre d\u2019Onda (Burriana, Castell\u00f3n) en el contexto de los establecimientos costeros del norte de la ciudad de Sagunto en \u00e9poca iberorromana<\/em><\/a>, as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/\">TRAMA<\/a> digital publications collection.<\/p>\n<p>In digital format, it is <strong>available for purchase<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/serveis\/publicacions\/llibre\/trama-11-torre-onda\/\">here<\/a>) <strong>and in open access, by chapters<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/serveis\/publicacions\/llibre\/trama-11-torre-onda\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the book \u2015<span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uji.es\/departaments\/com\/base\/estructura\/personal?p_departamento=104&amp;p_profesor=206688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josep Benedito Nuez<\/a><\/span>, Pablo Medina Gil, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Melchor Montserrat, and Arturo Oliver Foix\u2015 are researchers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uji.es\/serveis\/ocit\/base\/grupsinvestigacio\/detall?codi=226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research project<\/a> on the application of new techniques and analytics in the study of the archaeological heritage of Sagunto and the province of Castell\u00f3n, funded and led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uji.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universitat Jaume I<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This monograph constitutes a significant contribution to the study of Iberian, Iberian-Roman, and early Imperial Roman ceramics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><strong>A New Perspective on Torre d\u2019Onda (Burriana, Castell\u00f3n)<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Torre d\u2019Onda, located in Burriana (Castell\u00f3n), is one of the most cited port enclaves in the bibliography of the Valencian coast, known for its close relationship with commercial activities in the northern territory of the city of Sagunto from the mid-2nd century BC, that is, throughout the final phase of the Iberian culture.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/icac.cat\/en\/serveis\/publicacions\/llibre\/trama-11-torre-onda\/\">new monograph published by ICAC-CERCA<\/a> provides a comprehensive review and update of the ceramic assemblages found at this site, accompanied by the corresponding graphic representation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Josep Benedito<\/strong>, one of the authors of the work, highlights: &#8220;A review and update of the various ceramic assemblages from the Iberian, Iberian-Roman, and early Imperial Roman periods was necessary, which has allowed us to fix the periodisation and propose a new vision on the development of the site and its possible relationship with the impact of the Sertorian conflict on the pre-Roman settlement of this territory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"destacat-entrevista dreta\">\n<div class=\"small-text\">\n<p>The study confirms the existence of commercial connections with the Andalusian coast, the Ebro Valley, Carthage, and Italy at the end of the Roman Republican period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The work stands out <strong>studying unpublished ceramic material from Torre d\u2019Onda<\/strong> deposited in the Archaeological Museum of Burriana stores. The book examines a series of Iberian and Italic ceramic pieces that were only partially known, with these ceramic assemblages being much more extensive than previously thought. Additionally, many of the Iberian pieces feature rich decoration with zoomorphic, phytomorphic, geometric, and plastic themes.<\/p>\n<p>The study revealed an interesting set of Italic ceramic imports, including kitchenware and Italic amphorae from the southern peninsula. In red, is the location of Torre d\u2019Onda, north of the inlet known as &#8220;la Olla&#8221;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Key Contributions of the Study<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The main novelties of the work focus especially on painted ceramics from the Iberian period and imported ceramics from the Italic area in the late Republican period. Research Promotion Plan at the Universitat Jaume I 2020), coordinated by the research group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uji.es\/serveis\/ocit\/base\/grupsinvestigacio\/detall?codi=226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ANTIQUA &#8211; Ancient History and Archaeology<\/a> of the University Jaume I.<\/p>\n<p>This project aims to deepen the knowledge of the cultural changes produced in the Iberian population north of Sagunto as a result of the Roman conquest.<\/p>\n<p>During this period, a model of Roman territorial dominance was consolidated with the reconstruction of Saguntum, which after the Second Punic War went from being an ally city of Rome to a federated city.
