The University Rovira i Virgili (URV), the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICAC) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) collaborate in the organisation of the University Master’s Degree in Applied Classical Archaeology. Research and Transfer (MACA) for advanced training in the application of cutting-edge scientific techniques and technologies to archaeology.
This new master’s degree program is an interesting proposal for all those who wish to delve into the study of the Material Culture of Antiquity with a rigorous and professional methodological framework.
A new perspective of Classical Archaeology
This new MACA master’s degree is aimed at graduates in fields such as Archaeology, Classical Studies, History, History of Art, Anthropology or Architecture, among others, who wish to delve into new professional areas in Archaeology, and specialise in cutting-edge technologies and methodologies such as remote sensing, GIS and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applied to landscape archaeology, lithic archaeometry, analysis of bioarchaeological remains or 3D model creation from architectural remains.
Besides theoretical academic training, MACA master’s degree boost training in laboratory techniques and computing resources aiming to a scientific-technical career, which can open a professional opportunity in the field of management and dissemination of heritage.

Three specialization areas
MACA master’s degree offers three elective itineraries, which allow students to learn about different areas of archaeology and specialize in either:
- Landscape Archaeology
- Archaeology of Architecture
- Archaeology of Cultural Material (including Bioarchaeology)
Now, a blended program
New MACA goes blended! Face-to-face teaching focus on hands-on and laboratory activities, while the lectures are mostly taught online through the URV virtual campus (Moodle) and concentrate on one or two days a week during the first semester (from September to January).
Hands-on and specialization activities will be carried out in the laboratories and facilities of the three institutions that participate in the master’s degree (URV, ICAC, UAB) so that mobility is guaranteed and students will be able to get to know the three centers first-hand.
There are scholarships to cover the costs of this mobility, as well as scholarship programs of the different participating institutions.

Since 2006, the three institutions organising MACA master’s degree, the URV, the ICAC, and the UAB, have combined their expertise and highly qualified academic teams to provide specialized training in Classical Archaeology.
The inter-institutional nature of the master’s degree allows it to offer teaching in a wide range of research subjects and specializations; an environment that promotes transversal and transdisciplinary studies that combine different specializations, approaches, and methodologies in Archaeology.

The interdisciplinarity and transversality of the master’s degree teaching staff allows the master’s thesis (TFM) to be co-directed by researchers from different specialties who complement each other.

The inter-institutional nature of the master’s degree in which the URV, the ICAC and the UAB participate allows it to offer teaching in a wide range of specialized research subjects, so that the student can learn about the different aspects of archaeology.

- Duration: 60 ECTS

- Type: blended
- Languages: Catalan (30%), Spanish (40%) and English (30%)
- Timetable: On-site classes take place once or twice per week from September to January.
- On-site activities take place in Tarragona, at the URV’s Faculty of Arts and at the ICAC, and two subjects are taught in Barcelona at the Faculty of Arts and Humanity of the UAB.
- Fees: 1.806 € (for students from the UE, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Andorra*, or resident in Spain, price for 2021-22). Rest of students: €2,913. *Students with degrees from other countries will be charged an academic tax of €218.15 the first time they enroll only.
