More than 110 national and international experts will gather in Tarragona from November 24 to 26 for the 43rd edition of the International Conference of the Association of Environmental Archaeology (AEA), organized by the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICAC-CERCA).

The main focus of the event is environmental archaeology, a field of research that connects multiple disciplines of archaeology with environmental sciences (archaeobotany, zooarchaeology, geoarchaeology, etc.). This is one of the specialties of the GIAP research group at ICAC-CERCA, which is leading the organization of the conference.

The AEA2023Tgn conference aims to deepen the relationship and impact between past societies and their environments, especially in animal and plant ecosystems.

The study of this complex relationship has a direct impact on current issues such as sustainable development of natural resources, biodiversity preservation, reintroduction and protection of endangered species, heritage preservation, and social dynamics such as migration, among others.

The conference, to be held at the Palau Firal i de Congressos in Tarragona, is a testament to the city’s prestige and international reputation in this academic field.

With over 80 presentations, the conference ‘represents an exceptional opportunity to share the latest advances in the discipline at the international level and create a space for debate from a global and inclusive perspective,’ as stated by Alexandra Livarda, Ramón y Cajal researcher at ICAC-CERCA and coordinator of the event.

We will contribute to the understanding and preservation of our past, highlighting the broad impact and relevance of environmental archaeology in addressing the current challenges of society, Alexandra Livarda.

The visit of international experts and the dissemination of the conference will significantly contribute to the promotion of Tarragona as a cultural destination, once again highlighting the economic potential of conference tourism in the city.

The election of Tarragona as the venue for the annual AEA conference consolidates its key position as an international hub for archaeological research and highlights the city’s rich historical and cultural heritage

The international conference AEA2023Tgn is supported by: SGR2021 GIAP-ICAC (AGAUR  2021 SGR 00992), Port de Tarragona, Patronat Municipal de Turisme de Tarragona, Associació Catalana de Bioarqueologia (ACBA), Esclat Parc Central and BAR Publishing, which have made the conference possible.
