Project funded by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and European Union
The project aims to deepen our knowledge of combustion structures in the northwestern Mediterranean during the Iron Age (first millennium BC). In this sense, it is a continuation of previous research, which has yielded satisfactory results. An interdisciplinary methodology will be applied, integrating specialities such as archaeobotany (anthracology, carpology, phytoliths), organic chemistry and micromorphology. A battery of analyses will be carried out on samples of hearths and ovens from sites located in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, the south of France and the Balearic Islands, the results of which will complement those obtained from the previous project. In addition to the analytical studies, experimental work and ethnographic observations will be carried out. Experimental archaeology works will allow us to contrast the information obtained through analyses, to verify or reject the hypotheses put forward as a result, and to obtain samples for analyses for comparative purposes. The ethnoarchaeological study will complete the information on the uses and maintenance needs of the combustion structures. The main focus will be on domestic hearths and ovens. The set of results (materials and geological and organic composition, temperatures reached, fuels used, residues of food or other substances in contact, among other aspects) will allow for a better understanding of the construction processes and functions performed by the combustion structures, beyond their morphology, and to verify or reject the association between variables such as construction types or location and the functions performed. It is expected to increase information on fuels, natural resource management and everyday activities such as food. This will contribute to improving the knowledge about the organisation of domestic groups. The results may interest other sites or areas in the Mediterranean where structures with similar characteristics are documented. The interdisciplinary and experimental nature of the project will allow the results to be published in high-impact journals, while at the same time offering a broad training ground for pre-doctoral researchers. Finally, the main theme of this research related to aspects of everyday life, will facilitate the dissemination of the results to society in general.
