Breve currículum
Dr. Riso is a Marie Curie Fellow since December 2022 and she joint the GIAP group with the project “Networking Food plant imports in roman Italy (NetFoodIt)” under the direction of Dra. Alexandra Livarda.
Dr. Riso is an expert in classical archaeology, specialised in archaeobotany, having been part of one of the best research teams in this field, under the direction of Professor Giovanna Bosi and Anna Maria Mercuri at the Laboratory of Palynology and Paleobotany of the University of Modena (Italy), where she earned her PhD in Models and Methods for Material and Environmental Sciences in 2018. For her Master’s and Doctoral thesis she focused her attention on funerary archaeology and specifically on Roman rituals and the funerary banquets through a multidisciplinary approach that combines archaeological, literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence. In 2014 she wrote her first monograph “La festa dell’addio” (Riso F. 2014, La festa dell’addio, Piazza Armerina, Italy).
During her PhD project, she was involved in the study of the necropolis of Mutina (Modena, Italy), the capital of the Cisalpine Gaul Roman province, combining archaeology, epigraphy and archaebotany with the most advanced technologies. In particular, she stayed at Huddersfield University (UK) to perform SAXS (Small Angle X-ray Scattering) analysis to detect the carbonization temperature of carpological remains and CT-scan (Computed Tomography Scanning) analysis to study their internal structure. She won the International Mobility Call and this allowed a collaboration with the University of Limoges (FR) where she carried out the anthracological analysis for the study of the funerary pyres.
She also won the call of the École Française de Rome for the excavation of the necropolis of Porta Nocera in Pompeii (IT), working with the most expert researchers in funerary archaeology.
In 2019 she earned a Specialization degree in Archaeological Heritage at Bologna University, a fundamental title in this field in Italy. Those 2 years of training gave her practical multidisciplinary skills, such as the application of CT-scan to micro-excavation thanks to the collaboration with the company TECEUROLAB, a technical service center and test laboratory in Modena.
She is “Expert in Classical Archaeology” at the Universities of Ferrara and Bologna, assisting in teaching and exams. She has been co-organizer of several international conferences and exhibitions. In 2019 she was editor and curator of the exhibition «Atleti, Cavalieri e Goleador» at the Archaeological Museum of Bologna, with the collaboration of Bologna Football Club.
In 2019 she won the Rotary Club award “Galielo Giovani” and the Certificate of Research Excellence at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
In 2021 she won a Postdoc position of the FNRS at the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium). She started her research on the roman sanctuary of Cittanova (Modena, Italy) with the project “Mu.Sa: Mutina Sanctuaries. Political aspects and cultures interaction through a multidisciplinary approach” that focuses primarily on the study of boundaries and sanctuaries. In 2022 she organised an international workshop on roman sanctuaries to discuss new sharing approaches on places of worship.
