Joan Gómez Pallarès (Igualada, 1960) has a PhD in Classical Philology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) (1986) and is Professor of Secondary Education (1983-1986) on extended leave of absence. In 1988 he joined the Department of Latin Philology at the University of Barcelona (UB) before returning to the UAB, where he has been a Full Professor of Latin Literature since 2002.
He has participated as principal investigator in more than thirty national and international projects and he is the author of a bibliography of 300 references on Latin codicology and Eclesiastical computus manuscripts, Latin literature (specially poetry), Latin epigraphy (in verse and mosaic inscriptions), Roman gastronomy, the history of the ideas and the history and anthropology of wine in antiquity. He has directed research works in all these areas and has been officially recognized by the Spanish government through the positive evaluation of five six-year research periods (from 1986 to 2015, without interruption). In 2000 he has been awarded the Distinction for the Promotion of University Research by the Government of Catalonia studies in its first call.
He has been Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, Vice-Rector of Postgraduate Studies, Vice-Rector of Research, Vice-Rector of Economic Policy and Planning, and Rector in functions several times, all at the UAB. He has also been Vice-President of the Consortium of University Libraries of Catalonia (CBUC) and a member of the plenary of the National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity (CNEAI).
He is the secretary of the Catalan Association of Research Centres (ACER) and, as a member of the Board of Directors, he is as well a member of the Board and Steering Committee of the Agency for the Research Centres of Catalonia (CERCA). He is also a member of the Knowledge Territory Innovation Platform (CTI) working group and has participated in drawing up the Agenda for the Innovation and Competitiveness of Catalonia 2015-2020. He is a member of the Appeals Committee of the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU Catalunya).
He is the Director of the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICAC) since October 2013.
