February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, is commemorated by aiming to visualize and value the work of women researchers around the world, as well as promoting scientific vocations in girls.
11-F has been the International Day of Women and Girls in Science since 2016, after its proclamation by the General Assembly of the United Nations. The purpose of this celebration is to recognize the key role that women play in Science and Technology, make their work more visible and create female references for children who can contribute to the choice of these professional careers by girls.
The ICAC joins this celebration for the fifth consecutive year and, at the initiative of the Gender Equality Committee, is involved in different activities.

Claiming the key role of women in science
The ICAC Gender Equality Committee organizes an online dissemination talk to learn about the career and motivations of Prof. Soultana Valamoti (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), a benchmark in the study of archaeobotany and techniques for recovering biological remains in the field. She is also a very active person on issues on gender equality and sexual harassment, as representative of the School of History and Archeology at the committee of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
With the talk “The story of golden bracelet: a personal view on fine juggling act of being a working woman in academia”, Prof. Valamoti will reflect on the multiple difficulties that women researchers face, as well as the importance of awareness and visibility actions.
This talk will be held on Friday, February 10, at 1 p.m. (CET).
Our referents
Starting on February 10, and for several days, we will launch an awareness campaign on social networks to enhance some of our references in archeology. Stay tuned to these video pills where ICAC researchers spread the word on the work of women who stand out for their contributions in the field of archeology, and who they consider a reference.
¡We are scientists!
For the fifth consecutive year, the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) and the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) launch a new edition of the 100tífiques! initiative to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and make it possible for schools throughout the country to have the opportunity to connect and meet researchers and technologists from the business environment, research centers, and universities in Catalonia and the world.
Postdoctoral researcher Beatriu de Pinós Marta Mateu Sagués, from the Protohistoric Archeology team, will give a talk at the Escola Vedruna de Berga on February 10.
On February 10, 561 scientists will visit 496 Catalan primary schools to explain to boys and girls that in the future they can become whatever they want. Maria Bouabdellah and David Its Me, from the Catalan tv show “Random”, present here the #100tífiques project, co-organized by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) and BIST with the collaboration of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
The organization of these activities for the commemoration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11F) at the ICAC is an initiative of the Committee for Gender Equality, in the framework of the development of the ICAC Equality Plan and the ICAC HRS4R strategy.
