The eighth archaeological campaign carried out in Costa de la Serra (La Secuita, Tarragona) ended last July 16.
ICAC researchers, students of the Interuniversity Master’s Degree in Classical Archaeology (URV-UAB-ICAC), students of the URV History and Art History degrees, and local volunteers have participated in this archaeological campaign, which has lasted three weeks and has ended up with news at a structural level on the archaeological site.
Among the group of volunteers, there was Marc Dalmau, a former student of the Interuniversity Master’s Degree in Classical Archaeology, who is the one who discovered the site.
The last archaeological campaign ended up with news at a structural level on the site
Excavation works this year focused on completing the southeast sector of the late-republican fortification and on following the path of the two wall sections located in the southern area of the fortification and which run in parallel. These two wall sections retain most of their layout, although in many parts they are at the foundation level. Both wall sections are about 50 meters long. On the other hand, stratigraphy continues to provide a rich material context, both at the level of ceramic materials and other elements (fragments of constructive elements such as floors, coatings, ceilings…) that will allow researchers to better understand how the architecture of the place worked.
Two new structures appeared in the southwest sector: two walls parallel to the southern wall that could be related to the access to the complex. Another novelty has been the location of a large depression in the upper part of the hill where the archaeological site is located, of unknown functionality but which would most likely form part of the Costa de la Serra complex. These aspects will be the object of archaeological intervention in future campaigns.
Archaeological works has been carried out within the quadrennial research project approved by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya Forms of occupation of the territory and evolution of the town in the Western Cosetane during protohistory (CLT009 / 18/00095), lead by Maria Carme Belarte (ICREA-ICAC) and funded by the City Council of La Secuita (Tarragona) and the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
