The Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICAC) is organising the international conference Amphorae et Dolia: Production and Trade of Amphorae and Large Containers in the Western Mediterranean during the Roman Era for autumn 2025.
The conference aims to establish itself as a reference point for Roman pottery studies, focusing this edition on the production and trade of amphorae and dolia in the Western Mediterranean during Roman times. These vessels, essential for food storage and transport, are key to understanding the economic and commercial dynamics of the Roman world.
The Amphorae et Dolia conference will take place on 29–30 October at the ICAC headquarters in Tarragona.
A consolidated research line
The conference is part of a series of events organised by the ICAC over recent years, dedicated to the study of Roman ceramics. Notable precedents include the 3rd International Congress of the Society for the Study of Ancient Ceramics in Hispania (2014), co-organised with SECAH; the Figlinae Hispanae congress (2018), which focused on Roman ceramic workshops in Hispania; and the Dolia ex Hispania congress (2022), specifically devoted to large transport and storage containers.
With the Amphorae et Dolia conference, the ICAC aims to further its research trajectory on Roman ceramics. It provides a platform to discuss the latest contributions in this field and produce a state-of-the-art overview to be published as a high-level scientific work.
Organising team
The conference organisers are researchers Ramon Járrega, Enric Colom, and Maria Rueda, specialists in Roman ceramics and classical archaeology, and members of the ICAC’s MIRMED research group.
More information coming soon
A second circular will detail the registration criteria, as well as the guidelines for poster and paper submissions. The ICAC encourages the scientific community to follow updates on this event and actively participate. For further information, please contact mrueda@icac.cat.
This conference reaffirms the ICAC’s commitment to high-level archaeological research and its role as an international reference centre for the study of the material culture of the ancient world.
