Brief CV
Graduated in Biology and History, I had a Master in Human Biology and a PhD in Biology (1989). From 2006 to 2024 I was full time professor in the Biological Anthropology Unit of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and coordinator of the Biology Degree there. From 2007 to 2017 I was director of the team “Grup de Recerca aplicada al Patrimoni Cultural” (GRAPAC) that focused its work on developing techniques and knowledge for the conservation of all types of archaeological heritage material. Since 2017, I am responsible of the anthropological studies of the project “Servei tècnic de localització, recuperació i anàlisi antropològica i genètica de restes òssies humanes de la Guerra Civil i la dictadura franquista”. Since December 2024 I am senior researcher at the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology.
My research framework ranges from the prospection of sites with human remains to the excavation and subsequent study of them. To do this, I use various techniques, from morphological methodologies to biochemical tests such as the analysis of stable isotopes. The chronology in which I work is wide, from the Middle Pleistocene to the modern era.
The priority line of my research, but not exclusive, is the study of human feeding habits. Dental and chemical studies (stable isotopes) are some of the techniques I use, allowing to know aspects such as the diet of the population or its state of health in its social and environmental context. The synchronic and diachronic study of these aspects and their different lines of development are key to understand processes of acculturation, colonization or transition.
