Marta Tosolini’s research focuses on the study of socio-environmental interactions and landscape transformations throughout the Holocene. Her academic background combines complementary approaches from archaeology, historical topography, geoarchaeology, and palynology, with a particular interest in reconstructing past landscapes and human-environment relationships.
She obtained her BA (2021) and MA (2024) in Archaeology and Art History from the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. During this period, she focused on the geomorphological reconstruction of ancient landscapes and human settlement dynamics in the Piana Campana (southern Italy), combining legacy data analysis with GIS applications, historical topography, and geoarchaeological methods.
In 2024, she collaborated with the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli within the framework of the interdisciplinary PRIN 2022 IN.RES.AGRI. project, dedicated to the study of ancient agricultural landscapes in southern Italy. It was through this project that she first became involved in palynology, a discipline that would later become central to her research interests.
In 2025, supported by an InBound scholarship, she completed the Master 2 in Quaternary Studies, Prehistory and Bioarchaeology at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. During this period, she specialized in palynology, applying it to the reconstruction of past vegetation and landscapes, as well as to the study of socio-environmental interactions, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean context of central Tunisia.
She is currently pursuing her PhD within the MEDLANDS project, investigating coastal cultural landscapes and socio-environmental relationships in Thrace (northeastern Greece) during the Holocene. The project is developed through an international collaboration between the ICAC and the CNRS. As part of this research, she will carry out scientific activities at the Institut des Sciences de l’Évolution de Montpellier (ISEM, CNRS), within the Archéobiologie et Paléoenvironnements (ArcheoPal) research team, further strengthening her academic and research trajectory between France and Spain.
Using a multiproxy approach that integrates pollen analysis, non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs), sedimentary microcharcoal, and geoarchaeological and archaeological data, her research aims to reconstruct the evolution of coastal landscapes in the territory of ancient Abdera and to explore how environmental change, land-use practices, cultural contact, mobility, and colonization processes shaped these landscapes throughout the Holocene.
