Brief CV
Marie-Claire Savin holds a doctorate in archaeology from the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne and in geology from the University of Zaragoza. Her expertise particularly focuses on the evolution of ornamental stone exploitation and usage during Antiquity and the Middle Ages, primarily in France and Spain.
Her professional activities are divided into three complementary areas: consulting and advisory services, research, and teaching.
Within the Archaeometric Studies Unit, led by Dr. Anna Gutiérrez Garcia-M., Dr Savin offers specialised consultancy and advisory services to museums and cultural institutions and collaborates with various researchers and scientific teams on specific issues related to the characterisation and provenance of archaeological materials. Her work centres on the provenance of materials, especially marbles, through a combination of field surveys, documentary research, and the application of various analytical methods. She maintains a close professional collaboration with Professor Pilar Lapuente, her former PhD supervisor, in the interpretation of the analytical results of white marbles.
As a member of the ArPA&LIRA research group (“Arqueometria i Produccions Artístiques” i “Literatura, Iconografia i Recepció de l’Antiguitat”), led by Dr. Diana Gorostidi Pi, she actively participates in various research projects, enhancing understanding of the economic, technical, and cultural dynamics associated with the extraction and circulation of these materials.
In parallel, she teaches in the Master’s programme in archaeology at Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, training students in material recognition, analytical methodologies, and the interdisciplinary approach required for archaeological research.
This integrated approach enables her to maintain up-to-date expertise, actively contributing to the development and dissemination of knowledge concerning historical materials.
